GARBAGE CAN MAP
Ga rb age Ca n. Map
“Garbage Can Map” was created by Ryan Kaabel, a graphic design student at the Estonian Academy of Arts. He designed the map to help fellow students properly sort their waste into the correct bins. The map was adapted from the academy’s previous evacuation plan.
The Idea
“Ryan quoted in an interview:
“While I was smoking on the graphic designer's balcony, I noticed a banana peel casually sitting on the table. It got me thinking about how easy it is for people to overlook where to properly throw their trash. That’s when the idea hit me—to create a map showing where all the trash bins are, so students can easily find the right spots to dispose of their waste.”
Process
Here’s the first image that influenced the poster 'Where’s the bin?', which later became the starting point of the Garbage Can Project.

The initial idea was to design a new garbage can to help students recycle properly. However, it wasn't a strong enough solution and would have added extra work for managing the trash. Then he realized the real issue wasn’t with the design of the garbage cans, but rather with their location—
Where are the right bins?.
He began noting down all the garbage cans on the third floor of the C section and then reimagined the evacuation plan to create a garbage can map.
The earlier version of the map used icons, which Ryan later replaced with colors. Unfortunately, none of the original icon-based maps have been preserved. The font he used was 'Geom,' created by graphic designer Cedric Müller, based in Bremen, Germany.

Kaabel used four different colors to help users distinguish between trash cans. You might think the colors were related to the type of trash, but since Ryan Kaabel is colorblind, he actually chose the simplest colors for his own ability to differentiate between them. Some have speculated that the color-coding wasn’t designed for colorblind users, but rather as a time-saving method, as he was busy with larger projects that would later shape his career.
